Swedish-Turkish Scholarship Programme for PhD studies and postdoctoral research

Apply for scholarships for research visits in Sweden for up to 12 months!

If you are a PhD student, postdoctoral researcher, senior scientist or university lecturer from Turkey, you can apply for scholarships for research visits to Sweden. Apply during 16 October – 15 December 2017 for the academic year 2018/2019. SI will offer 10 to 12 scholarships.


Only citizens of Turkey may apply.

Can I apply?

The programme provides PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and university lecturers with an opportunity to conduct research at Swedish universities within the field of social sciences or academic disciplines related to sustainable social development.

Thematically the programme follows the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and prioritizes the following Sustainable Development Goals:

Candidates belonging to any of the following categories may apply:

  • PhD student, applying for a part of his/her ongoing PhD studies to be carried out in Sweden (12 months maximum). Priority will be given to PhD students enrolled in PhD programmes in Turkey.
  • Postdoctoral researcher, with priority given to holders of a PhD degree from 2013 or later (12 months maximum).
  • Senior scientist – holders of a PhD degree acquired before 2013 (6 months maximum).
  • University lecturer – academic personnel at universities in Turkey who are neither enrolled in ongoing PhD studies, nor hold a PhD degree (6 months maximum).

There is no age limit.

You cannot be granted a scholarship if you:
have already lived in Sweden for two or more years when the scholarship period is due to begin

  • already have a Swedish permanent residence permit
  • have a Swedish work permit and are currently employed in Sweden
  • are applying for a scholarship at postdoctoral level, but do not hold a PhD degree
  • have already been awarded three or more scholarships/grants from SI.
  • are applying for a scholarship at PhD level but are not enrolled in ongoing PhD studies outside of Sweden*

*If your home university in Turkey has been closed you can submit an official document certifying your earlier status of a PhD student.

The scholarship application call for the academic year 2018/2019 is open from Monday 16 October 2017 to Friday 15 December 2017, 24:00 CET.
Scholarship offers will be sent to successful candidates by mid-April 2018 at the latest, and candidates are required to respond to the offer within one week. Please note that all decisions are sent by email only.

About the scholarship

The Swedish-Turkish Scholarship Programme is funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden and administered by the Swedish Institute (SI).

The aim of the Swedish-Turkish Scholarship Programme is to support individual mobility, thereby contributing to increased contacts and collaborations between actors in Sweden, as an EU member state, and Turkey.

The goal is to facilitate closer links between Turkey and the European Union, and to contribute to sustainable social development in the region in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and with special focus on strengthened democracy and respect for human rights.

Scholarship benefits

The scholarship is free of tax and amounts to SEK 15,000 per month for PhD students and university lecturers, and SEK 18,000 per month for postdoctoral researchers and senior scientists.


Scholarship holders and accompanying family members are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period.

SI Network for Future Global Leaders

All Swedish Institute scholarship holders are invited to become members of the SI Network for Future Global Leaders (NFGL), a network that offers unique opportunities during the stay in Sweden. Together with other talented people from all around the world, the scholarship holder is able to take part in a variety of events, exchange ideas and create networks that could benefit both career and personal development.

After the scholarship, all scholarship holders are also invited to the SI Alumni Network, a global network that helps deepen the relationship with Sweden, as well as other alumni, even after the programme.

Scholarship limitations

  • the scholarship is designed to cover living costs for the scholarship holder. There are no grants for family members. No funding for bench fees is provided.
  • the granted scholarship period cannot be altered or extended; however, it is possible to apply for subsequent funding through a new call for applications.
  • in case of a postponed arrival date, the scholarship period can be decreased accordingly.
  • there is no travel grant included in the scholarship offer.
